Plant breeding is the sexual cross between 2 genetically different parent plants, resulting in a wholly new family of individual daughter plants. What is Plant Propagation? Propagation involves taking the side shoots from raspberry plants and growing them in pots. This is asexual reproduction and the daughter plants are genetically identical or clones. What is a Floracane Raspberry Plant? Summer fruiting or floracane raspberries have a biennial growth cycle. New canes are expressed from below soil level and grow to about 2 metres in height during the summer. As the summer ends, days shorten and temperatures decrease leading the plant into dormancy. These vegetative canes over winter. During the following growing season these canes become fruiting cane after fertilization of flowers expressed in the spring. What is a Primocane Raspberry Plant? Primocane raspberries produce new canes from below soil level. Flowers are expressed in the late spring/early summer leading to fruit in late summer/early autumn all within the same year. The plants can then be double cropped by taking a crop off these canes in the late spring when the cycle starts again. Alternatively, after the autumn crop, the plants can be cut down and only one crop taken again the following autumn. Single cropping is preferred as both fruit quality and size are better.
