Glossary

     

Germplasm - A collection of parental breeding lines for use by breeders as parents when developing new varieties.

Primocane - The new shoots produced annually by a raspberry plant which commence growing each Spring following a period of dormancy. Some raspberry varieties produce flower and fruit on these shoots in the same year. These are called primocane varieties.

Floracane - Traditional raspberry varieties produced in Northern Europe are known as floracane varieties, whereby, flowers are initiated on new shoots as they grow during the summer months. These flowers do not express and produce fruit until the second year following a period of dormancy during Winter. Floracane is the expression given to the shoots in their second year when the flowers are expressed.

Biennial Growth Cycle - Floracane raspberry varieties have a biennial growth cycle whereby in the first new shoots (or canes) are produced which do not crop until the second year.

Dormancy - The period during Winter when the raspberry plant stops growing, loses its leaves and experiences a period of cold weather or chill.
